Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effect of integrative arts therapy on the emotional self-reliance and leadership of at-risk youth. A total of 14 participants (seven each in the experimental and control group) living in a foster care facility voluntarily participated in this study. The experimental group participated in the integrative arts therapy program once a week for 90 minutes, totaling 12 sessions, and the control group was not treated. The study instruments included the Emotional Self-Reliance Scale (ESS) and Leadership Game Test (IT-LGT), of which pre- and post-analyses were conducted. The results are as follows. First, as a result of pre- and post-analysis of the ESS, statistically significant effects were verified in the experimental group than in the control group. Second, in IT-LGT, the experimental group¡¯s leader and follower role-performance ability improved in comparison to the control group, resulting in positive changes in understanding the role of leaders and their communication and interpersonal skills. Third, by experiencing emotional purification during the treatment process, they were able to enhance their understanding of themselves through various role experiences, and positive changes in emotional self-reliance and leadership leading to setting goals for the future appeared.
The significance of this study lies in the fact that these findings provide the basis for integrative arts therapy interventions to improve emotional self-reliance and leadership in at-risk youth in the future.
